MUSANZE CAVES IN RWANDA.






The unforgettable adventure in Musanze caves in Rwanda


Visiting volcanoes national park for mountain gorilla trekking is not enough, utilize the opportunity and explore the charming and stunning musanze caves. The caves sit in Musanze district on the foothills of volcanoes national park simplifying it to visit them after trekking the rare mountain gorillas.


It is just a throw stone distance from Rwanda’s capital Kigali, approximately 90 minutes’ drive. And from the border of Uganda, it is only 25 kilometers to musanze caves.
It is believed that the musanze caves were formed sixty million years ago by volcanic eruption from basaltic lava of Mount bisoke and Sabyinyo Mountains. The lava cooled and formed these magnificent caves.

Musanze caves are the most visited caves compared to any other caves in Rwanda. It has a wide entrance of over 10 kilometers. The caves length is 2 km and 31 entrances. Before it being named musanze caves, it was called nyamwasama. These caves are among the recent added tourism attractions and they were opened to visitors in 2013 by Rwanda development board in partner with Rwanda defense forces.

Travelers that visit musanze caves are accompanied by a guide who is usually armed and all tours to reach all the corners of musanze caves usually take two to three hours.
Every traveler that visit the caves is rewarded by the knowledge of about the geological formation of earth and history of caves including how it was used as a hiding place during the massacre and war in the genocide.

These caves protect a large number of bats, so the visitors who want to sight bats, musanze caves is the best option for you to visit. Apart from the bats, the cave’s entrance is decorated by Green vegetation which is good for photo sessions.
                                                                              
Musanze caves were made better by the Rwanda Development Board by establishing footpaths, paved floors, and concrete stairways in order to allow easy movement of travelers when they visit the caves. When the lights are turn off while inside the caves, and you witness the darkness in the caves, it creates unforgettable memories of a lifetime.

During the time of exploring the cave, the traveler is given protective gears like helmet to wear with the torch to help you light the caves since they are dark inside. Please note: When you’re side, cover your mouth and nose to protect you from droppings of the bats and also avoiding infections from bats, the boots allow you to navigate the caves easily and the gloves prevent you from touching the caves directly.

When inside the traveler is advised not to divert and move away from the path followed by the guide since these caves have very many corridors and rooms so the chance of getting lost are high.
There is no specific time to visit these caves. They can be explored in the afternoon after gorilla trekking or in the morning depending on your choice.
The entrances fee to the cave is very affordable and bookings to the caves are done at Rwanda Development Board in advance.

Volcanoes national park has a lot to offer besides musanze caves. Some other interesting activities travelers can engage in include hiking to the top of the Volcanoes Mountains, golden monkey trekking, visit Dian Fossey grave, visiting the twin lakes of bulera and Ruhondo among others.
